Intersecting Identities

“Intersecting Identities” on view at the Clark Marriott Hotel Pampanga

Group exhibition hosted by Galerie Raphael opens June 22 – July 7, 2021

By Grace Ng

Identity is the way one perceives and expresses the “self”. Factors and conditions that an individual is born with—such as heritage, cultural background, and gender —often play a role in defining one’s identity. However, many aspects of a visual artist’s identity change throughout his or her life. Their experiences can alter how they see themselves or are perceived by others. Conversely, their identities also influence their individual and definitive art practice.

The artworks contain sets of themes and concepts that the artists use to help them build their imagery; such as the many parts that make up one's individualized self, or the concept of the internal and external psyche. It is a fusion of different styles, mediums, surfaces and techniques. Somewhere along the exhibit’s conception, the artists managed to locate and establish a sense of harmony amongst all of the variating elements.

The participating artists probe the dualities of strength and fragility, hope and despair, joy and grief – using their own artistic expression as a channel. The works for “Intersecting Identities” aims to demonstrate the enduring strength of art as a metaphor for crossroads of converging views. The exhibit is an amalgamation of learnings, as well as individual explorations of the social formula of what creates an identity.

“Intersecting Identities”, featuring works by Presidential Medal of Merit Awardee Juvenal Sanso, Dominic Rubio, Michael Cancio, Norberto Carating, Raul Isidro, Edwin Wilwayco, Marge Organo, Ombok Villamor, Magoo Valencia, Katrina Cuenca, Richard Arimado, Vic Bachoco, Patrick Esmao, Faico, James Gabito, Patricia Gan, Amado Hidalgo, Louie Ignacio, Art Lozano, Dr. Ronnie Lim, Nap Limaten, Almer Moneda, Ann Moneda, Jerry Morada, Perfecto Palero Jr., Michael Pastorizo, Richard Perez, Aljo Pingol, Edwin Tres Reyes, Jun Rocha, Jayvee Santos, and Ryan Velsaco, will be on view at the Clark Marriott Hotel in Clark Freeport, Mabalacat, Pampanga from June 22 to July 7, 2021.
