Almer Moneda

Calles Y Memorias (Streets and Memories)

“Calles Y Memorias (Streets and Memories)” by Almer Moneda at Galerie Raphael U.P. Town Center

Show runs March 18 – 26

Almer Moneda portrays the distinct aura and proud heritage of urban locales as subjects of his paintings; the essence that emanates from a familiar neighborhood. “Calles Y Memorias (Streets and Memories)” defines and captures the spirit of the city and its distinctive atmosphere, defining the identity of this particular time and providing a history for the viewer to reflect on as cities evolve in the 21st Century. Moneda’s urban landscapes represents the culmination of human development and endeavor that brings us to our glorious past.

Although several of the places depicted in this exhibit are no longer in existence and represent a time and sensibility that may be gone forever, the sentiment in these paintings is not nostalgic. Almer Moneda attempts to express and commemorate the splendor and uniqueness of these venues as they stand bold and brazen against the ever changing urban landscape during their transient existence.

“Calles Y Memorias” weaves personal and political geography to confront contemporary society’s relationship to the memories of our varied culture. The exhibition draws from the disciplines of geography and digital technology, aiming at connecting human beings to their urban environments; they are about persistence and possibilities.
