Modern and Contemporary Abstractionism

Concept and Rationalé:

On the occasion of the 1912 Salon de la Section d’Or in Paris, the poet Guillaume Apollinaire set about describing the growing abstraction movement in visual art as “…the art of painting new structures out of elements that have not been borrowed from the visual sphere, but had been created entirely by the artist.” Thus, he argued, abstraction is a purer form of art. Indeed, abstraction is often viewed as the hallmark of Modernism—freeing the artist from the confines of reality and empowering him or her to visually convey complex ideas, emotions, or feelings.

This exhibit represents an important survey of works by the most important abstractionists in the country today. From geometry figurations to the usage of color, texture, and form, the quality of the works is at an exceedingly high level and shows the caliber of talent and intellectual nous of the representative artists.
